Convocation 2010 offered many growing opportunities for the Cumberland Presbyterian Youth. "Holiness," the theme for the eleventh annual weekend-long retreat in Gatlinburg, TN, was hosted by the Grace Presbytery but graciously allowed youth groups denomination wide to the event. Headed up by Derek Jacks, Convocation was truly a blessing to those able to experience it.
Shaylon Sharp preached throughout the weekend for the over 330 conferees and offered his insights on various topics. He defined Holy as: set apart, other. He focused on what exactly God's otherness is and does. We rethought peace as complete wholeness with God rather than the absence of stress. Shaylon encouraged us to find what comes in-between God and us and ultimately challenged us to rid of that. After the final sermon was given, candles were offered to those who wanted to take them. The candles represented that we are the light of the world and that we to make that our identity.
Students praised our God during worship lead by Altered. Praise was transformed with the help of the band. Additional to their playing abilities, the band members bonded and related to conferees throughout the weekend.
Relationships old were renewed and new ones were created. Additional to getting to know our own youth groups on a deeper level, the retreat opened us to other Cumberland Presbyterian youth who go through the same issues we go through every day. These friendships gained helped to guide and encourage on another in our daily walk with Christ.
Overall, Convocation might not be remembered for the songs sung, the jokes made, or the energisers danced to, but rather, the presence of God among us.
