Youth Evangelism Conference 2009

By Madison Rush, Brenthaven, Nashville Presbytery

The Youth Evangelism Conference, held December 27-30, 2009, in Nashville, TN, was an amazing experience for those who attended, though honestly, my concern at the start was, "what will the youth coming to this conference think about it as a whole?" I was privileged to serve on the YEC planning team, and while at first I had no idea what that would be like, I learned quickly that it was something I really enjoyed doing. Then, as the participants began arriving, my apprehension faded and I became very excited about the Conference.

With the West Nashville church as our host, we began the first day with energizers, and then the 250 conferees broke into small groups. At lunch, we heard from a speaker whose ministry in the prison system includes making pocket crosses. With his instruction, we then had the opportunity to make similar crosses in our small groups after lunch. The afternoon was devoted to free time for experiencing Nashville, followed by a joint worship service that night.

On Tuesday, each small group went to downtown Nashville to experience servant evangelism. The groups delivered water, hot chocolate, coffee, and blankets to people made homeless or in need. Upon returning to the conference, we each had an opportunity to share something of our group's experiences with the other attendees. It was the time when we really saw God's work come through.  We discovered how a relatively small group of youth can make a difference, and how through our efforts, God is made known. After dinner that evening, Gabe Lyons spoke, following which we had fun at a concert by the band Eleventyseven!

At the end of the final worship service on Wednesday, we had a circle prayer that filled the sanctuary with the love of an amazing group of young people. It was an experience that I will always remember—a memory with will remind us all to wake up and stay awake to God's Word.
